Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 9 Could Launch With 5 Foldables Next Year

Samsung is gearing up to shake the foldable market with a major expansion next year. Instead of the usual three models, the Galaxy Z Fold 9 lineup could balloon to five distinct foldables, each targeting different users and use cases.

Why Samsung Is Betting Big on Foldables

This year, Samsung’s dual foldable strategy surprised many by outperforming expectations. The wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 stood out, accounting for around 70% of foldable sales. Strong demand pushed Samsung to add an extra one million units to production.

Now, Samsung is ready to build on that momentum. Korean media reports reveal the company is already working on two separate wide-format fold projects targeting 2027, potentially increasing its foldable offerings from three to five models. That’s an unusually aggressive expansion that raises the question: why so many?

Two Wide Folds for Different Needs

The current Fold 8 impresses with its wider 4:3 aspect ratio, offering a better canvas for multitasking and productivity than previous designs. But it still doesn’t nail video watching, where unused screen space remains an issue.

Samsung seems to be addressing this by developing a second wide fold with an even wider aspect ratio focused specifically on video, gaming, and entertainment use. This contrasts with the Fold 8 Ultra, which is optimized for productivity and multitasking.

How Samsung Could Differentiate the Lineup

Samsung recently hinted at reintroducing the S Pen to the foldable line, suggesting the Fold 9 Ultra could lean heavily towards productivity. Meanwhile, the two wider models might prioritize portability and entertainment.

This approach signals a move away from one-size-fits-all foldables towards distinct devices for different lifestyles.

The Tri-Fold Enters the Picture

Another layer of complexity arrives with Samsung developing a second-generation tri-fold foldable set for next year. Both the tri-fold and dual-fold experiments could become full product lines, broadening Samsung’s foldable ecosystem.

This gives Samsung a potential edge when Apple finally enters the foldable arena. Instead of responding with a single foldable, Samsung may meet Apple with a full roster tailored to multiple needs.

Risks of Too Much Choice

But more models isn’t always better. Samsung will need to carefully differentiate each device. Otherwise, the newer, wider screen models risk cannibalizing Fold 9 sales instead of expanding the foldable market.

Samsung’s bold bet on diversity in foldables could reshape the market — if it pulls off the tight balance between innovation and consumer clarity.
