How This Solopreneur Makes $22K/Month While Traveling

Making $22,000 a month while hopping between countries might sound like a dream, but Rob Hallam is living that reality. He’s flipped the usual work advice on its head and found success on his own terms — all while traveling the world and running his business solo.

Flipping the Traditional Workday

Rob Hallam’s routine defies the typical self-help mantras you see online. Instead of waking up at dawn to seize the day, he starts his mornings between 11 a.m. and noon, embracing his night owl nature. The late starts once made him feel guilty, but after years of trial and error, he’s found this rhythm works best for him.

He spends his mornings easing into the day — having breakfast, soaking up some sunlight, and tackling small tasks like responding to customer emails. Around mid-afternoon, if it’s a training day, he heads to the gym for weightlifting and cardio, feeding his love for coffee as he settles back into work mode.

Deep Work Happens When The World Is Quiet

Hallam reserves his prime focus hours for the late evening when everything goes quiet. With distractions out of the way and daily chores completed, he dives into a solid eight-hour work sprint. This is when he enters his flow state — completely absorbed, uninterrupted, and channeling all his energy into building his business.

His approach to managing work is methodical. Every couple of months, he compiles a shortlist of important features, improvements, and bugs. When he sits at his desk, he either revisits unfinished tasks or picks the top priority based on what will move the business forward most.

Choosing What Truly Moves The Business

One of the keys to Rob’s success is his focus on substance over style. While flashy or fun projects might tempt him, he knows that most progress comes from the often mundane, behind-the-scenes tasks. He prioritizes issues raised by multiple customers or critical bugs, rather than chasing less significant feature requests that don’t impact enough users.

Rob likens entrepreneurship to surfing — it takes time to read the waves and figure out which ones will carry you farthest. Just like a surfer learning to ride, getting started is the hardest step. But once in the water and able to read the patterns, catching wave after wave becomes easier.

Traveling The World Without Losing Focus

For several years, Hallam bounced between cities weekly — a chaotic pace that made deep work nearly impossible. The breakthrough came when he settled in Colombia for three straight months, finding the stability he needed to deliver real results. Since then, his routine involves setting up base somewhere for 2 to 3 months, striking a balance between stability and adventure.

Travel fuels his creativity and happiness, and that joy translates directly to productivity. Having lived in more than 13 countries over the past several years, Rob knows firsthand that where he ships the most is always where he’s happiest.

Why Sleep Is Sacred

Sleep underpins everything in Rob’s life. While many entrepreneurs boast about surviving on just a handful of hours, Hallam swears by 9 hours of rest each night. He protects this like a non-negotiable appointment. Without sufficient sleep, creativity, motivation, and even going to the gym become impossible.

His nighttime routine includes switching off screens about an hour before bed, sometimes reading or watching something relaxing. This preparation ensures his mind is ready for quality rest and primes him for a productive next day.

Happiness Drives Productivity

The biggest misconception Rob had for a long time was that the gap between where he was and where he wanted to be boiled down to discipline. He believed he needed stricter routines, earlier mornings, and harder locks on productivity.

Travel changed that perspective. He learned that his peak output happens in places where he feels happy and at ease. That understanding flipped his work philosophy: productivity follows happiness. When he approaches work from a mindset of play and joy, his creations flourish.

He brings a bit of his childhood playfulness into his day, like solving a Rubik’s Cube, to enter a state of flow. That lightheartedness blends into his work, making the grind feel like a game rather than a chore.

Rob Hallam’s story is a reminder that success doesn’t always fit a cookie-cutter mold. By tuning into his own rhythms, focusing on meaningful work, and chasing joy through travel, he’s built a thriving business that funds a truly free lifestyle.
