Why Your Smart TV Is More Than a Screen

Smart TVs today no longer hide their true purpose: they’re built to spy. According to recent insights, manufacturers openly admit to losing money on hardware just to build a large install base they can monetise through targeted advertising. The way they do that? By monitoring everything displayed or played on your TV and sending that information back to their servers.

Imagine your TV quietly taking snapshots and audio clips multiple times every second—not just from apps like Netflix, but also from any HDMI or USB input. This includes your private videos, desktop displays, even embarrassing home footage.

Automatic Content Recognition: The Tech Behind the Curtain

This technology, known as Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), isn’t new. It works by converting screen images and audio samples into digital fingerprints matched against huge content databases. If you’ve ever used Shazam to identify a song, you’ve seen an early version of this technology in action. Now, it’s embedded in your smart TV, enabling brands to laser-target ads based on your precise viewing habits.

Most manufacturers hide ACR behind friendly labels like “smart interactivity” or “live plus,” muddying the waters about what data is being collected. Turning off ACR might work for now, but there’s no guarantee it will stay off, especially since companies are increasingly building these features deeply into the software, sometimes even flipping them back on with updates.

Why Traditional Fixes Just Don’t Cut It

Believe it or not, blocking these data streams isn’t as simple as changing a setting or using common network tricks. Many smart TVs don’t allow custom DNS settings or network configurations, and even if you try using tools like Pi-hole to filter traffic, modern protocols like DoH, DoT, and encrypted DNS make interception and blocking nearly impossible.

Plus, manufacturers often hard-code IP addresses and can update this list remotely, so chasing down every single address your TV contacts feels like fighting a losing battle. The sheer scale of IP spaces—Amazon alone has around 200 million—makes this approach impractical.

The Hard Truth: Unplug or Go Dumb

The only guaranteed way to stop your smart TV from phoning home is to cut off its internet connection completely. Some models offer a workaround by disabling smart features and booting directly into an HDMI input, effectively turning your TV into a “dumb” set. It’s not ideal, but it’s a strong privacy win.

If you connect via Wi-Fi, a factory reset might be necessary to clear lingering connections and stored credentials. Until manufacturers fully rethink these privacy policies, your safest bet is to keep your TV off the grid.

What the Future Could Hold

Looking ahead, it’s easy to imagine these TVs sending actual screenshots instead of just digital fingerprints, flooding servers with detailed images every second. AI could classify your content in real-time, potentially invading your privacy even more deeply. Some speculate that future TVs could even enforce strict licensing controls, blocking unauthorised content entirely—blurring the lines between privacy invasion and real censorship.

Whether any of this becomes mandatory or hidden deep in endless privacy agreements is anyone’s guess. But as surveillance tightens, you’re left with an uncomfortable choice: embrace the all-seeing smart TV or take control by disconnecting.
