Sounds exciting, right? But there’s a catch: this idea hinges on Tesla solving full self-driving technology perfectly and delivering the vehicle to customers by the end of 2026 for $30,000. That’s a big ask.

When the announcement dropped, a commentator confidently bet that Tesla wouldn’t meet this deadline, joking to shave his head on camera if proven wrong. That clip quickly became a meme, especially among Tesla fans debating the timeline online. Tesla is notorious for overpromising on timing, making this bet feel grounded.

September’s Robotaxi Event in Texas

Recently, Tesla held a highly selective event in Austin, Texas, teasing progress on their robotaxi service. Invitations went out almost exclusively to Tesla content creators, excluding journalists, which raised some eyebrows.

In the days leading up to the event, locals spotted a swarm of these Cybercabs roaming Tesla’s geofenced areas, sporting new features like coloured LED lights on the front for easy identification, accompanied by matching interior displays. It’s a clever touch, given their uniform design.

However, some quirks remain — the butterfly doors open widely, jutting into traffic, which could cause problems in densely packed cities. That’s just one example of the practical challenges still unresolved.

The Unresolved Challenge of Full Self-Driving

At the event, Tesla essentially announced Cybercab’s integration into the existing robotaxi service. But beyond this, concrete progress was scarce. The biggest hurdle remains: achieving reliable full self-driving.

What does “solved” even mean when it comes to autonomous driving? Opinions vary wildly on what failure rates and driving conditions are acceptable. Even in a geofenced environment, the technical bar is astronomically high, and many top minds have been wrestling with this problem for years without a definitive solution.

Even if Tesla cracked that today, there’s another mountain to climb: regulations. Selling cars without steering wheels or pedals isn’t just a technology challenge; it requires legal changes. In the U.S., safety standards and vehicle regulations move at a glacier’s pace, often forcing concept vehicles to retrofit traditional features before they hit production.

Think about side-view mirrors—a car hallmark that many futuristic concepts try to eliminate. Yet every production model still includes them because laws demand it. Removing critical driver controls entirely could take years, if it happens at all anytime soon.

Price Tag Still a Major Obstacle

On top of tech and legal hurdles, Tesla also promised this vehicle would price under $30,000. For context, the cheapest Tesla Model 3 currently runs around $35,000. While the Cybercab is smaller with fewer parts, including a smaller battery, delivering a breakthrough price while overcoming those other challenges makes this a tough feat.

Even if the vehicle makes it to market, meeting that aggressive price point is not guaranteed.

Lessons from Google Glass and Looking Ahead

This situation calls to mind the fate of Google Glass. Announced to much fanfare years ago, it pushed a concept far ahead of its time. Early adopters, dubbed “Glassholes,” were fierce advocates despite public backlash and practical shortcomings. Today, nearly every major tech company is racing to launch smart glasses, but only after nearly a decade of development and refinement.

Tesla’s robotaxi announcements feel similarly premature — exciting visions launched before the underlying tech and ecosystem are ready. Some enthusiasts are practically cultish about Tesla’s prospects online, but skepticism from outsiders is understandable.

Still, the prospect of cars without steering wheels eventually becoming mainstream isn’t far-fetched. It may just need a lot more time and patience.
