GTA 6’s Length, Map Size, and 30 FPS Performance Revealed

Rockstar’s GTA 6 is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious games yet, boasting an 80-hour campaign and a map triple the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s. But the big question remains: will it run smoothly at 30 FPS on PS5?

How Long is GTA 6’s Campaign?

Rockstar’s co-studio head Rob Nelson recently revealed in a New York Times interview that completing GTA 6 took around 80 hours. That total includes the main storyline plus optional missions that influence the narrative, suggesting a campaign with serious depth and replayability. While the exact core campaign length remains unclear, this would position GTA 6 as one of Rockstar’s longest games to date.

The mention of “optional goals with narrative ramifications” hints that players might want—or even need—to play through the campaign multiple times to explore different story outcomes. This breaks new ground for the franchise where replayability wasn’t traditionally front and center.

Just How Big Is Vice City Now?

The game’s map centers on a reimagined Vice City, based on Miami and its surrounding areas. Rockstar has boasted that this section alone is twice as large as Los Santos from GTA 5. But the whole world? It reportedly dwarfs even Red Dead Redemption 2’s massive map, coming in roughly three times its size. Considering how sprawling and detailed RDR2 felt—on horseback no less—that’s an enormous playground for players to explore.

This scale promises endless opportunities for chaos, exploration, and narrative discovery, setting a new benchmark in Rockstar’s open-world design.

Performance: 30 FPS and What That Means

The big reveal wrapped with the tagline “Captured on PS5,” which implies the showcased visuals are from a base PlayStation 5. While the graphics impress with intricate detail and vibrant environments, the frame rate tells another story.

Digital Foundry’s analysis suggests GTA 6 runs at a native 1440p resolution but locks at around 30 FPS with only occasional single-frame drops. For some, especially PC gamers or those used to 60 FPS, this might feel like a step down. Developer insights haven’t yet confirmed performance modes or 60 FPS options, leaving fans eager—and a bit wary—about the final experience.

Waiting On More

Rockstar’s Rob Nelson remained tight-lipped on specifics around ray tracing or higher frame rate modes during press previews, so questions about performance remain open. Xbox Series X and other platforms’ performance also remains to be seen. It’s a trade-off between breathtaking open world detail and smooth gameplay, and how that balance lands will shape player opinions.

Despite the frame rate debate, the gameplay footage shows promising mechanics: fluid third-person shooting, dynamic character switching, and engaging world systems that look ready to redefine the GTA formula.

More Than Just GTA 6

Meanwhile, Xbox unveiled a new disc-to-digital program letting players convert physical Xbox discs into digital versions on supported consoles. While it currently supports thousands of games and only Xbox One/Series Xbox discs, this move highlights the shifting landscape between physical and digital ownership.

Gamescom brought a slew of other updates too, from fresh looks at upcoming titles like Tides of Annihilation and No Law, to major announcements for The Witcher 3’s upcoming remastered edition and free DLC releases. Meanwhile, Metal Gear Solid 4 got a port to modern consoles, and new sequels and expansions continue rolling out.

This studio-packed week shows the gaming world hurtling towards a future where sprawling worlds and evolving tech dominate — but questions about performance and player choice remain front and center.

Whether GTA 6 hits all the right notes remains to be seen, but the promise is unmistakable: a vast, deep, and visually rich playground that sets Rockstar’s bar higher than ever.

If you caught the gameplay reveal, the trailer’s character switches and shootouts are worth a closer look, as they offer a fresh twist on what fans can expect from the franchise’s next chapter.
