Google Pixel 11 Review: Software Shines Amid Hardware Stagnation

Google’s Pixel 11 series debuts with a curious mix of modest hardware upgrades and bold leaps in AI-powered software. But with prices climbing and physical improvements barely noticeable, is the new Pixel worth your time?

Hardware Progress Slows as Costs Rise

After hands-on time with Google’s new Pixel lineup—the Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL, and 11 Pro Fold—the biggest impression is how restrained the hardware changes are. Component costs have surged, squeezing innovation and leading to a launch event with surprisingly few physical upgrades. Some features have even taken a step back, highlighting a broader hardware crisis.

The base Pixel 11 does make some moves: wireless charging speed jumps to the latest 25-watt standard, a rarity for Android phones with magnetic alignment. The main camera sensor is 56% larger, catching up to competitors but from a very modest starting point. Inside, Google’s new Tensor G6 chip boosts AI processing power by 50% and makes everyday tasks feel snappier. Visually, the design softens with a less pronounced camera bump and a return to the all-glass camera bar.

However, beyond those, battery life remains unchanged and continues to lag behind Samsung and Apple in real-world use. Other camera sensors see no updates, graphics performance on the new chip stays flat, suggesting gaming performance could fall behind even mid-tier rivals. Storage doubles to 256GB, but prices start at $899, up from $799 last year.

Pro Models Feel Underwhelming with Subtle Tweaks

The Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL offer an equally mixed bag. Wireless charging and wired charging are faster on paper, but the improvements are modest and uneven between the two sizes. The display peaks at a dazzling 3,600 nits, only a slight bump from last year’s 3,300 nits—too subtle to notice in use.

The telephoto camera sensor grows by 30%, a clear upgrade. Yet, the main camera remains unchanged, sticking with last year’s resolution and sensor size. The standout new feature is Highlight: a ring of eight bright LEDs that glow in different colours when you receive calls or interact with Google’s AI named Gemini. While visually striking, the feature delivers little new functionality, essentially serving as a spiffed-up notification light. Adding this came at a cost—a previously included body temperature sensor has been quietly dropped.

Prices for the Pros have jumped to $1,099 and $1,299 with lower base RAM than last time, starting at 12GB instead of 16GB. Google’s press event tried hard to dress these changes as meaningful gains, but much was buried in fine print or glossed over.

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold Offers Only Mild Refinements

The foldable joins the lineup with the same faster wireless charging, the new Tensor chip, and a camera that adopts the larger 56% light intake from the base model. Both the main and inner screens get brighter with tougher scratch resistance, and the phone is a millimetre thinner when folded, sporting almost 10% less thickness—a thinness achieved by switching the back panel to a composite material instead of premium glass, which might scratch more easily.

Despite some bezel thinning and a sleeker design, the Fold looks less polished in person, weighed down by mismatched corner curves. The price rises $100 to match the rest of the range, but storage remains stuck at 256GB, offering no extra capacity.

Software Is the True Star of the Show

While hardware stagnates, Google’s software innovations feel like a breath of fresh air. Video quality benefits from smarter processing that sharpens details, improves skin tones, and reduces noise in dark settings—even on cameras physically unchanged. New Night Sight captures maintain impressive quality with just a third of the light data, making night shots almost as quick as daytime photos.

Google’s cloud-based video stabilization service called Video Boost, which enhances clips after recording, now improves shaky footage more efficiently, compensating for hardware limitations with AI-driven fixes. The most jaw-dropping feature is Rambler, a dictation tool so accurate it even auto-corrects phrases and adds emojis seamlessly, integrated directly into the keyboard for use in any app. This is easily the smartest voice transcription seen to date.

Gemini AI powers live dubbing that auto-detects different languages and offers real-time voice translation with remarkable fluency—though only supporting four languages at launch and not available in Europe immediately. This could revolutionise video dubbing by significantly lowering costs for creators, replacing expensive human services with high-quality AI-generated alternatives.

Other Creative Features Aim to Delight

Google’s Magic Eraser compiles the best stills from video clips where subjects look their best, easing the burden of perfect framing and clarity. The digital zoom on base models increases to 30x, with Pros pushing to 120x, combining hardware telephoto upgrades with AI sharpening. Plus, the camera now supports customizable photographic styles and a creator suite with on-screen teleprompters and social media-friendly layouts.

The Pixel Watch also taps AI, generating bespoke watch faces on demand—including quirky options like a fluffy dinosaur—that showcase Google’s commitment to software elegance.

So, Should You Buy the Pixel 11?

The Pixel 11’s price now matches the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, which delivers a stronger hardware package—better screen, bigger battery, S Pen included. Still, the Pixel’s ultra-clean software and early access to cutting-edge AI give it a niche appeal.

Given the minimal hardware advancement and even a slight decrease in RAM, last year’s Pixel 10 offers a smarter buy for those looking to save money without losing much future-proofing or performance. Many AI-powered perks will trickle down over time, softening the blow of skipping this year’s upgrade.

There’s a catch: relying heavily on cloud-connected AI means your internet connection and privacy matter more than ever. Securing your data with tools like VPNs can’t be an afterthought—especially when your phone constantly communicates with servers worldwide.

In the end, Google’s Pixel 11 series represents a watershed moment where software innovation attempts to mask hardware fatigue. It might be enough for diehard fans but leaves the broader market wondering if the future of smartphones is software first and hardware second—or if it’s both, but separated by a year or more.
