The Honor Robot Phone is shaking up the smartphone world—not just a gimmick, but a bold reinvention of mobile photography. Its built-in gimbal transforms shaky videos into cinematic shots, raising the bar for what a phone camera can do.

Initially dismissed as a concept device, the Honor Robot Phone has emerged as a mass-produced reality that’s redefining smartphone use. Honor calls it a new species of smartphone, not for flashy gimmicks, but because it changes how owners interact with their device. The standout feature is a tiny, motorized gimbal camera built right into the phone.

Out of the box, the phone makes a strong impression. The retail packaging is large and well-organized, housing the phone up front along with a charger, cable, and an unusual stabilizing case. This unusual case isn’t just for protection—it doubles as a two-stage stabilizer and stand that cleverly holds the phone steady even as the gimbal moves.

Next-Level Image Stabilization

Once the phone’s protective cover is slid away, a single button activates the gimbal, which emerges with a fluid, precise animation. The stabilization it provides is extraordinary. When pitted against the latest iPhone in side-by-side video tests involving swirls and shakes, the iPhone footage looks chaotic, but Honor’s robot phone maintains remarkably smooth and stable shots. This feat is powered by a micro motor 70% smaller than those in typical gimbals, yet it successfully counters both vertical and horizontal motion flawlessly.

Despite this complex mechanism, the phone retains impressive specs: a bright, vibrant display, a powerful processor, massive battery capacity with ultra-fast charging, and generous storage options. However, the default image color science, especially skin tones, felt a bit off during initial use.

You’re in Control—and the Phone Is Too

Beyond stabilization, the gimbal joystick offers precise control, letting users pan and tilt the camera with adjustable speed. Cinematic preset modes allow effortless 90° or 180° spins, perfect for creative shots like starry skies with real motion baked in. Various modes like tilt lock keep horizons level while moving, and FPV modes lock the camera’s gaze forward or downward. The super steady mode blends all these for unbelievably smooth footage—outperforming many dedicated, external smartphone gimbals.

One major benefit of a built-in gimbal is its immediacy and no extra charging required—you carry one less gadget while gaining higher responsiveness, since it’s wired directly into the phone’s systems. This built-in design allows it to respond faster than any Bluetooth-synced accessory.

Smart Tracking and Versatile Camera Setup

Taking a step further, the gimbal can autonomously track moving objects or faces after a quick double tap. While it occasionally trips, the tracking is impressively swift and reliable for most everyday scenarios. The phone can shoot full panoramas by itself without you physically rotating the phone—just tap a button, and it takes four shots and stitches them together on the spot. However, the output resolution from these modes caps at 24 megapixels, which feels like a missed opportunity considering the 200-megapixel sensor behind it. The image stitching, surprisingly, isn’t as seamless as expected either, with better results often seen on phones without this mechanized camera.

Built for Cinematic Excellence

Honor’s collaboration with ARRI adds a professional touch to the video experience. Users can shoot in ungraded log footage to color grade later or instantly apply ARRI’s cinematic looks to footage. Features like false color mode, focus peaking, and golden ratio framing aid filmmakers in capturing polished shots. When the framing is set, it remains fixed as the gimbal moves—a rare and handy capability.

The AI Assistant: Novelty or Next Step?

The Robot Phone also debuts an interactive AI assistant, summoned with a palm gesture. This embodied AI blends smartphone control, internet connectivity, and live video feed. It can do fun tricks—dancing or flipping the gimbal, making jokes about who should pay a bill, or offering style advice during video calls.

But while entertaining, the AI features verge on gimmicky compared to more advanced AI systems without rotating cameras. Their true value may be regional, appealing primarily to markets more comfortable with robotics and novelty tech. Honor’s open-source approach invites developers to build on the gimbal’s capabilities, hinting at untapped potential down the line.

Durability Questions Linger

Despite passing rigorous tests and carrying IP54 water and dust resistance, the complex moving parts raise durability concerns. A single drop could impair the gimbal, and recalibration or repairs likely won’t be easy consumer fixes. The phone also limits vertical video resolution to 2.8K by cropping from horizontal footage, indicating stabilization challenges when filming vertically.

Innovation with a Narrow Audience

While the extreme stabilization may be overkill for many, the technology shows remarkable promise. Integrating a micro motor gimbal that outperforms many external gimbals, without compromising core smartphone features, is an impressive engineering feat. This phone is bound to captivate a niche but passionate group of creators who want precision stabilization on the go.

The ball is now in developers’ courts to build novel apps that tap into this gimbal’s power. Until then, the Robot Phone serves as an exciting but slightly quirky example of where smartphone cameras might head next.
