Why the M5 Ultra Chip Is a Game Changer

Apple has unveiled the M5 Ultra, its most powerful chip yet, powering the latest Mac Studio. The chip houses an incredible quad-die architecture, delivering memory bandwidth that hits a staggering 1.2 terabytes per second. That’s a leap beyond its predecessor, the M3 Ultra, which topped out at 819 gigabytes per second.

There are two versions of the M5 Ultra. The base model boasts a 30-core CPU paired with a 64-core GPU. Opting for the $1,300 pricier upgrade unlocks the full unbinned chip with 36 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores. However, this full chip comes with a catch — you lose the efficiency cores Apple used to include, focusing entirely on maximum performance through ‘super’ and performance cores instead.

Breaking Down the CPU and Neural Engine

Unlike the M3 Ultra which had a mix of efficiency and performance cores, the M5 Ultra’s base model has 10 super cores and 20 performance cores, shedding efficiency cores entirely. The full upgrade adds two more super cores and four performance cores, totaling 12 super and 24 performance cores. The neural engine has also doubled—now 32 cores compared to 16 in the M3 Ultra—with a set-up comparable to the newer M6 chip.

Apple’s clever quad-die design is new here. The M5 Ultra is made by bonding two M5 Max chips (each a dual-die), rather than a single big die, which boosts manufacturing efficiency and yield. This modular design helps avoid scrapping entire chips over a single faulty die, enhancing production success.

Performance Gains Are Serious, But Is It Worth the Price?

In raw numbers, Apple touts a 25% boost in single-core and 30% in multi-core performance over the M3 Ultra. But the real jump is in special tasks like large language model prompt processing — nearly three times faster — and AI image generation, which is now four times faster. 3D rendering speeds nearly doubled as well. The GPU cores haven’t increased in number but now each packs a neural accelerator, giving roughly 4.5 times better AI GPU performance. Actual GPU throughput is 40% higher compared to the predecessor.

Yet, this beast doesn’t come cheap. The starting price for the M5 Ultra Mac Studio is $5,499, with the full unbinned chip upgrade tacking on $1,300. The base M3 Ultra Mac Studio had already risen from $3,999 up to $5,299 over the summer. Apple’s pricing trajectory here sets a high bar for potential buyers.

Other Noteworthy Upgrades on the New Mac Studio

Beyond the chip, Apple doubled SSD speeds on the new Mac Studio to around 14 GB per second, matching the Mac Pro’s PCIe Gen 5 benefits. It also introduced the N1 chip, which unlocks Bluetooth 6 and Wi-Fi 7, stepping up from the previous 5.3 and 6E standards. Gamers get a boost too: ray tracing performance improves by roughly 50% on the M5 Max and nearly 80% on the M5 Ultra compared to the M4 Max and M3 Ultra respectively — although Macs still aren’t gaming-first machines.

The Apple Magic Keyboard sees subtle keycap updates aligning with recently launched MacBooks, but remains largely unchanged.

RAM Options and Price Complexity

The Mac Studio’s high-end 512 GB RAM configuration won’t arrive until late October, with availability expected to be limited due to ongoing RAM supply issues. Interestingly, this option is only available on the full 36-core CPU model, meaning buyers wanting max RAM must already commit to the pricier $1,300 chip upgrade. Apple has even dropped the 512 GB RAM option on previous Ultra models because of this shortage.

One standout tip: the base M5 Max Mac Studio, priced at $2,500, offers a solid balance with 36 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD. Upgrading GPU cores beyond this is costly and forces higher RAM tiers too, quickly doubling upgrade expenses. For most users, sticking with base models of either the M5 Max or M5 Ultra is the smartest call.

How to Avoid the $1,300 Upgrade Mistake

The steep upgrade to the full unbinned M5 Ultra chip adds a handful of cores but at a significant price hike with little return for most users. You lose efficiency cores, pushing performance focus, and the upgrade is key if you want that hefty 512 GB of RAM—but for anyone who doesn’t, it’s an excessive spend. The base $5,500 M5 Ultra with 32-core CPU, 64-core GPU, and 96 GB RAM is already a powerhouse, and suitable for demanding workloads.

Apple’s new Mac Studio lineup represents a serious leap in power and speed. But as with all cutting-edge tech, the trick is finding the sweet spot between performance and cost. Keep an eye on compatibility with your needs before splurging on the top-tier chip and RAM combos.
