Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls: What You Need to Know Before Launch

Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls is stepping into the spotlight as a fresh tag team fighter set to launch on August 6th. Developed by Arc System Works, this game brings a unique 4v4 battle system featuring fan-favorite Marvel heroes and villains alike.

Why Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls Stands Out

Arc System Works, renowned for iconic fighting games like Guilty Gear and BlazBlue, is the creative force behind Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls. Unlike the typical 3v3 or 1v1 frameworks common in fighting games, this title embraces a 4v4 format, letting players unleash team compositions showcasing the Marvel universe’s breadth.

This setup is a deliberate choice to highlight Marvel’s vast roster and team-based superhero dynamics, encouraging strategic swaps and combined attacks in battle.

Building the Ultimate Marvel Tag Fighter

The partnership unfolded after PlayStation’s interest in expanding their fighting game lineup, following the success stories of Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8. They pitched the idea to Marvel, who were familiar with fighting games through prior Marvel vs. Capcom collaborations. Arc System Works was then brought on board, despite initial reservations about handling such a major IP.

Studio president Minoru Kidooka was eager to push the studio into more Western IP territory, which influenced the decision. Originally planned to lean on Western comic art styles, Marvel encouraged Arc System Works to stick with their signature Japanese aesthetic, resulting in a visually distinctive look that fits the studio’s past work.

The Lineup: Teams and Characters

The game launches with 20 playable characters split into five thematic teams:

  • Guardians: Penny Parker, Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man, Star-Lord
  • Fighting Avengers: Black Panther, Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man
  • Knights of Doom: Doctor Doom, Green Goblin, Carnage, Magneto
  • Samurai Outriders: Blade, Deadpool, Loki, Ghost Rider
  • Unbreakable X-Men: Wolverine, Storm, Danger, Magik

Players can mix characters across these teams for their 4-member squads, offering a lot of flexibility in playstyles and strategies. A post-launch DLC will introduce Phoenix Cyclops and more characters.

How Combat Works in Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls

Each player controls a team sharing one health bar. Battles start with one main character and one assist, with two additional slots opening as the fight progresses. Assist characters can jump in to extend combos or defend with defensive moves like Assemble Counters or Crossovers that disrupt enemy attacks.

Combat moves range from light to heavy attacks, plus unique skills. Players can choose to execute abilities via traditional inputs for more damage and skill gauge gain, or use single-button versions that are beginner-friendly. Filling up the skill gauge lets players unleash powerful EX moves and the ultimate Tokon Assemble, where all four team members coordinate a devastating attack.

Dynamic Stages Packed with Marvel Flair

The game offers six detailed stages: Asgard, Wakanda, Savage Land, X-Mansion, Nowhere, and New York. Each includes multiple districts that battlefields shift between as players break walls to transition from one area to another, adding tactical layers to positioning and movement reminiscent of Guilty Gear Strive’s style.

More Than Just Fighting: Episode Mode

Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls includes a campaign named Episode Mode, penned by comic book writer Kieron Gillen with a rotating roster of artists. Each episode centers on one of the five teams confronting an ancient cosmic Champion and their enigmatic Promoter, who assembles heroes for the fight. Players will get about 10 hours of story-driven action exploring these epic Marvel clashes.

When and How to Play

Mark your calendars for August 6th when Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls hits PC and PS5 priced at $60. For extra content, the $85 Digital Deluxe Edition offers lobby cosmetics and the Year One Pass, featuring four additional characters and a new stage. The $100 Ultimate Edition bundles alternate costumes for several fighters and the other deluxe perks. Pre-orders unlock exclusive cosmetic items, too.

This fighting game is shaping up to offer both deep mechanics for veterans and accessible options for newcomers eager to jump into Marvel battles with friends or solo.
