GTA 6 Campaign Length, Map Size and Visual Details Revealed

Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be one of Rockstar’s most ambitious games yet. With a reportedly 80-hour campaign and a map three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2, players have a lot to look forward to.

How Long Will GTA 6 Take to Complete?

Rockstar’s co-studio head Rob Nelson recently shared that finishing Grand Theft Auto 6 took him around 80 hours. This estimate includes the main storyline plus some optional missions with narrative consequences, according to an interview in the New York Times. While it’s unclear whether this counts all the side content or represents a 100% completion, it positions the game as one of the longest campaigns Rockstar has ever produced, rivaling the length of Red Dead Redemption 2’s expansive story.

Interestingly, the campaign seems to offer some replayability— a bit unusual for the franchise— hinting at different narrative paths or outcomes depending on choices made during optional missions. Details are still sparse on this front, but the idea introduces a fresh layer of depth to the Rockstar formula.

Just How Big Is the GTA 6 Map?

The game is set primarily in Vice City, a reimagining of Miami along with surrounding areas of Florida. Official sources reveal that this Vice City portion alone is twice as large as Los Santos, GTA 5’s sprawling urban region. More strikingly, the overall GTA 6 world is said to be roughly three times the size of the Red Dead Redemption 2 map — a massive playground considering how vast RDR2 felt, even when getting around on horseback.

That scale should deliver unparalleled exploration opportunities, from dense city streets to expansive rural landscapes, fitting the franchise’s signature blend of urban chaos and wild adventure.

What About Graphics and Performance?

The GTA 6 reveal trailer famously ended with the note “Captured on PS5,” suggesting the visuals shown run on the base PlayStation 5 console. Digital Foundry’s analysis indicates that the game runs natively at 1440p resolution, maintaining a mostly steady 30 frames per second with only occasional frame drops. For many, 30fps is a divisive choice, especially when other contemporary titles aim for 60fps or higher, so it remains to be seen how this will impact the gameplay experience.

Rockstar has remained tight-lipped about whether there will be performance modes or higher frame rate options on upgraded hardware like PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X. For PC players, this could raise questions about optimization and settings once the game launches.

Sandbox Systems and Gameplay Tweaks

Beyond numbers, the gameplay shown delighted many with its smooth third-person shooting, dynamic character switches, and detailed open world. The interactions and driving mechanics received praise for looking tight and fun, promising the big-budget polish fans expect from Rockstar. Some stories about optional relationship systems also surfaced, suggesting player choices could steer certain missions or character dynamics, adding interesting layers to immersion.

Beyond speculation, we’ll have to wait until the game arrives to truly judge how all these systems hold together and provide the signature GTA thrill ride.

Other Industry Highlights

Meanwhile, Xbox has announced a new disc-to-digital program rolling out soon to select Xbox platforms. It allows owners of physical game discs to redeem digital versions without repurchasing, a move many see as a signpost in the ongoing debate between physical and digital ownership in gaming.

At Gamescom this year, plenty of other game reveals and updates surfaced, such as new looks at Tides of Annihilation, No Law, Final Fantasy Revelation, and The Witcher 3’s upcoming DLC and remastered edition. CD Projekt Red notably offered the classic Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone expansions for free to existing Witcher 3 owners— considerably boosting the value for long-time fans.

With all this momentum, the gaming world is buzzing as GTA 6’s massive scale and detail set new expectations. For those who missed the gameplay reveal, it’s worth watching the 26-minute trailer to soak in the environment, combat, and driving showcased.
