GTA 6 Gameplay: What We Learned from the Big Reveal

Rockstar Games finally unveiled gameplay footage for Grand Theft Auto 6, and it’s packed with fresh mechanics and cinematic detail that push the series forward. Here’s what we discovered that sets this game apart from its iconic predecessors.

Return to Rockstar’s Signature Depth in Interaction

The GTA 6 trailer opens with a familiar scene: characters approaching a drug dealer’s block to set up a deal. But this time, Rockstar brings back a layered interaction system reminiscent of Red Dead Redemption 2. Holding the L2 button lets you ‘focus’ on NPCs—including a dog—with options to pet, scold, or study. These small touches hint at richer, nuanced social interactions within the game’s world.

As tension escalates, the trailer smoothly transitions from third-person exploration to cinematic cutscenes, blending storytelling and gameplay seamlessly. When the shootout kicks off, the cover system is back in play, and there’s even a glimpse of destructible environments, as a character crashes through a wall during a firefight.

Dynamic Dual-Protagonist Gameplay and Tactical Combat

Players will switch between Jason and Lucia, two characters working as a duo with distinguishable roles. There’s speculation about some tactical layers—like commanding cover fire—but it remains to be seen how deep that system goes. We catch glimpses of Lucia’s hand-to-hand combat skills, complete with counterattacks, and a shooting style that looks on par with top-tier third-person shooters.

Weapon wheels and item wheels return, granting quick access to a variety of gear, including body armor and health tonics similar to Red Dead Redemption 2’s stat boosts. The game HUD also displays bank and wallet cash, hinting at a refined economic system. And yes, you can interact with your apartment down to the smallest details—turning lights and TVs on and off, and even choosing what to drink from the fridge for buffs like energy or focus.

Vice City Comes Alive with Dense Open-World Detail

The new GTA 6 world reportedly doubles the size of GTA 5’s Los Santos, offering a sprawling urban playground filled with bustling streets, realistic traffic, and pedestrians. Construction sites, bus stops, and busy sidewalks create a convincing, living city. Driving scenes showcase the late ’80s/early ’90s-inspired BMW M3 with detailed damage mechanics, from shattered windshields to shooting out tires.

Beyond vehicles, the game explores a variety of activities—from basketball in driveways to underwater scuba diving. And the character-switching mechanic allows seamless transfers between Jason and Lucia, whether they’re riding together or apart.

The GTA You’ve Been Waiting For

Shooting finally looks as fun as it should, borrowing bullet-time elements from Rockstar’s past hits like Max Payne 3, delivering slow-motion kill montages and tactical options such as disarming enemies. Police chases remain intense, with a six-star wanted system and nuanced detection mechanics involving cars, faces, and CCTV tracking. Burning cars to evade cops clears their knowledge of your movements, adding layers of strategy to escapes.

The audio side keeps the ’80s vibe alive with tracks like Depeche Mode’s “People Are People,” while the original game score mixes symphonic and pop elements, balancing energy and mood.

Rockstar has clearly poured care into every detail—the lighting, animation, and scale blend into a next-gen experience unlike anything in open-world gaming. The blend of cinematic flair with interactive freedom hints at a game that’s as thrilling to watch as it will be to play.
