Smartphone makers have long chased the dream of a truly bezel-less screen. Tecno’s new concept phone claims a 0-millimeter bezel, but does it really deliver? The answer is more complex—and revealing—than you might think.

When Did Bezels Become a Big Deal?

Remember the years when screen-to-body ratios were the hottest feature in smartphone launches? Phones were shedding bezels like winter coats. We cheered every fraction closer to 100% screen, betting that less bezel meant a better phone.

Manufacturers got creative pushing the envelope — from Xiaomi’s Mi MIX series with radical minimal bezels to Samsung’s waterfall curved displays wrapping around edges. Xiaomi even stunned us with the Mi MIX Alpha, sporting a display that curled all the way around the back, boasting a screen-to-body ratio over 100%.

But perfection came with tradeoffs. Curves brought fragility, unwanted reflections, and accidental touches, leading brands to dial back from extreme bezel-less dreams. Now, most flagship phones settle for slim but visible bezels around 1-2 millimeters—something that has quietly become the new normal.

What Does Tecno’s Zero-Bezel Phone Actually Look Like?

Fast-forward to 2026 and Tecno dangled in front of us a concept phone with a 6.7-inch display claiming zero bezels anywhere on the front. The idea? Screen front and center, no distractions or edges stealing your attention.

Look closely, though. There’s a silver frame circling the phone—something that immediately makes you question the zero bezel claim. But here’s what sets Tecno’s design apart: the bezel isn’t black as usual. It’s hidden beneath the screen, so from a straight-on view, the display looks edge-to-edge, bezel-free.

Comparing it with, say, a Pixel 11 Pro, makes the difference clear: on most phones, you can see a thin black border around the screen between glass and frame. Tecno’s concept stacks the display below the raised frame, effectively masking the bezel.

So Why Isn’t This Concept Phone Ready for Your Pocket?

This innovative stacking trick sounds perfect, but it introduces a new snag. The metal frame bumps up just enough so when swiping—from the top for notifications or the bottom for home gestures—you can actually feel that edge. Instead of a smooth glass border, your finger drags along the frame’s rim. This tactile interruption breaks the immersion more than a tiny bezel ever would.

Users who adore seamless full-screen experiences might find this frustrating in daily use. Moreover, the rough edge complicates putting on protective cases, risking overlap on the display itself.

Though the rest of the phone specs impress—144Hz bright display, triple rear cameras, a hefty 6,000mAh battery—it’s light as a plastic dummy phone. All this points to the reality behind it being a concept, not an imminent shipping product.

Tecno’s press release hypes the device as a breakthrough reimagining phone interaction in the AI era by erasing visual barriers between screen and reality. But the most captivating feature might actually be the phone’s back, decked with what looks like a holographic 3D butterfly wing effect. It’s one of the most convincing lenticular optics anyone’s seen—deep and almost popping out of the chassis. A clear case will be a must if they ever make this phone real.

Why Do We Still Need Bezels?

This phone illustrates why bezels aren’t just aesthetics; they serve practical purposes. A small bezel ensures fingers glide smoothly without interruption. It provides a buffer for screens to breathe under cases without being compromised.

The zero-bezel dream is neat, but with current display tech, a little frame remains necessary for a flawless user experience. Sometimes chasing perfection means missing what actually works.
