Xbox Hikes Console Prices by Up to 50% as GTA 6 Trailer Hits Netflix

Xbox has stunned gamers worldwide with a sharp price increase of up to 50% on its consoles. Meanwhile, Rockstar Games is putting GTA 6’s first gameplay reveal behind a Netflix paywall—for six hours. These moves aren’t just about games; they’re a glimpse at how the industry is shifting fast.

GTA 6 Gameplay Trailer: A Paywalled Premiere on Netflix

Rockstar Games has taken an unprecedented step with the upcoming GTA 6, announcing an exclusive gameplay reveal on Netflix on August 27 at 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time. For six hours, only Netflix subscribers will get a first look at what promises to be one of the most anticipated games of the decade. After that, YouTube viewers can catch the trailer, but expect copyright takedowns for channels posting it early.

This isn’t just a trailer drop. Rockstar’s strict control over their content—including revenue claims on videos using their trailers, even muted ones—reinforces how the developer guards its work aggressively. By putting the reveal behind a subscription wall, they’re setting a new precedent for game marketing that blends video streaming and gaming worlds.

Sony’s Financials: Big Profits but Flat Game Sales and a Shift Away from Physical Discs

Sony reported a strong first quarter with sales surpassing 937 billion yen (about $5.8 billion) and a 37% jump in operating income to 202 billion yen ($1.26 billion). However, game sales were essentially flat, dragged down by hardware sales dips and fewer third-party titles.

They shipped 1.6 million PS5 consoles during this period—retail sales, not end-user numbers—and sold 66 million games, with a striking 82% being digital downloads. That figure is clearly shaping Sony’s decision to phase out physical game discs, a move CFO Hiroki Totoki defended by pointing to the growing digitization of content across entertainment sectors.

Is the End of Physical Games Really the Future?

Sony insists that retailers have been given enough notice and that transitioning to all-digital won’t hurt business through 2028. Yet resentment bubbles among retail partners and gamers who still prefer physical media. The reality is that while digital sales dominate now, many players value owning a physical copy, and retailers rely on disc sales for revenue.

This shift opens an opportunity for competitors—particularly Xbox—to exploit. With Sony’s focus narrowing on digital alone, Xbox’s next moves will be crucial to capture those traditional gamers who aren’t ready to go fully digital.

Behind Sony’s Numbers: Bungie and Marathon Struggle

Despite Sony’s bullish financial statements, their flagship Bungie game Marathon tells a different story. After an initial launch peak of 88,000 concurrent players on Steam, numbers fell to around 11,000 by the end of season one. Even with a free weekend boost to 40,000, player counts quickly tanked again, and the recent PvE mode only pushed numbers to about 15,000 before slumping anew.

The current 24-hour peak under 5,000 players pales in comparison to Destiny 2’s significantly higher counts, despite Destiny 2’s age and dwindling momentum. This underlines an uncomfortable truth Sony is reluctant to face publicly: Bungie’s retention problem could pose long-term risks.

Xbox’s Price Hike: A Sharp Blow Across the Globe

Xbox is following a very different financial path, though its news isn’t good for consumers. In response to the ongoing RAM shortage, Xbox raised prices across all their Series X and Series S models effective August 1. The Series X 1TB in the US jumped from $650 to $800—a 23% increase. Australia saw a 29% price hike, pushing the price over AU$1,000 to AU$1,100.

Europe took the brunt of these hikes with Series X prices climbing 33% from €600 to €800. The Series S models suffered the most outrageous increases—up to 50% on the 1TB model in Europe rising from €400 to €600. This spells trouble for Xbox as its consoles now cost significantly more than PS5 with fewer exclusive draws.

Xbox’s Next Console and Backwards Compatibility

On a brighter note, Xbox’s next-generation ‘Project Helix’ promises strong backwards compatibility, with leaked documents suggesting Xbox 360 games will run on PCs, handhelds, and the new console without additional development work. Original Xbox titles should also arrive on PC by October, expanding the library dramatically. This could be a key strategy to maintain interest despite high prices.

Delays and Layoffs Impact Elder Scrolls and Tencent’s Last Sentinel

The wider gaming ecosystem shows some turmoil. ZeniMax Online Studios confirmed delays in Elder Scrolls Online due to layoffs, pushing expected updates into 2027. Meanwhile, Tencent’s Lightspeed LA studio laid off around 80 staff and appears to have canceled the ambitious open-world game Last Sentinel, redirecting remaining developers elsewhere.

Goodbye to Ubisoft’s NFT Game

Celebrated by most, Ubisoft announced the shutdown of their NFT PvP game Champions Tactics this October—marking the end of the publisher’s controversial venture into blockchain-based games. The backlash against NFT integration in mainstream gaming has clearly shaped Ubisoft’s reversal.

Roblox’s Growing Empire and Investment in AI

On the business front, Roblox reported an astonishing $1.5 billion in quarterly revenue and 123 million daily active users, a 10% increase even after child safety lawsuits. They proudly noted 57% of users are age-verified and that they generate 4% of global gaming revenue. The company also doubled down on AI tools to help users build experiences, claiming a 15% quarter-on-quarter leap in AI adoption.

New Releases Fueling the Gaming Landscape

Fresh games kept the scene lively, from the surprise release of Lumines Remastered on mobile to the announcement of Palworld Online MMO by Singapore’s Garena. Unique titles like Rideshare Simulator and the cooperative puzzle game Big Walk also made waves, offering quirky and handcrafted experiences.

Big Walk, in particular, has drawn praise for its deep co-op experience, though its lack of solo or matchmaking options means it’s built for tight friend groups only.

Indie Highlights and Upcoming Releases

Among indie stories, Project Zomboid hit a Steam peak of 121,000 players after its first major update in five years, expanding its map and systems. Meanwhile, ’Beast of Reincarnation’ from Pokémon veterans Game Freak opened with mixed reviews, praised for combat but criticized for pacing and dialogue.

Not all new games are hits—Missfall Hunter suffered from performance issues and unpopular in-game monetization, highlighting the delicate balance studios face between gameplay and revenue strategies.

A Voice Actor’s Pub: A Gaming Character Comes to Life

Beyond the screen, Luke Dale, voice actor for Kingdom Come: Deliverance’s Hans Capon, bought a rundown pub in the Czech Republic to create a real-world gathering spot for fans, aptly named The Nobleman. His restoration journey has earned attention for blending gaming passion with community building.

The gaming industry is shifting rapidly, from pricing shocks to marketing innovations and renewed focus on digital ecosystems. For players and creators alike, navigating these changes is now part of the game.
