GTA 6 Campaign Could Take 80 Hours, Map Three Times Red Dead 2’s Size

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 6 might be one of their longest games yet. The co-studio head revealed it took 80 hours to complete with a map sprawling three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s world.

How Long Is GTA 6’s Campaign, Really?

Rob Nelson, Rockstar’s co-studio head and the current face of GTA 6, recently shared that it took him 80 hours to finish the game, including the main storyline and some optional narrative missions. This is a staggering figure compared to past Rockstar titles and raises questions about how much of that time covers core plot versus extras. Optional goals with story impacts hint at a campaign designed with replayability in mind, a fresh twist for the franchise.

Rockstar’s previous lengthy campaigns, like in Red Dead Redemption 2, set a high bar, but 80 hours, if accurate, positions GTA 6 as one of their most ambitious projects yet.

Unprecedented Map Size and Setting

GTA 6 will transport players to Vice City and its surrounding Florida-inspired areas. According to reports, the Vice City portion alone is twice as large as Los Santos was in GTA 5. More impressively, the entire GTA 6 map is reportedly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s world.

Given how huge Red Dead’s open-world felt (slow horse rides included), GTA 6’s bigger scale promises a sprawling playground packed with detail, exploration opportunities, and presumably, a whole lot of mayhem.

Visuals and Performance on Current Consoles

The gameplay reveal ended with “Captured on PS5,” signaling Rockstar’s confidence in the base PlayStation 5 hardware. The visuals boast high detail, though many have wondered about performance trade-offs. Digital Foundry’s analysis suggests the game runs natively at 1440p and holds a mostly steady 30 frames per second, with occasional minor drops.

While a 30fps cap won’t sit well with every player, especially on PC or higher-end consoles, there’s still uncertainty about performance modes or ray tracing support. Rockstar’s lead didn’t clarify when pressed on these specifics, leaving fans eager to see how it plays across different hardware.

Gameplay Innovations and Player Experience

The reveal video showed vibrant third-person shooting, dynamic character switching, and complex story-driven choices. Relationship mechanics reportedly have optional involvement, adding another layer of player freedom. Rockstar’s apparent commitment to delivering a blockbuster experience is evident in these systems, hinting at substantial evolution from previous GTA outings.

Xbox’s New Disc-to-Digital Program

Alongside GTA news, Xbox announced a disc-to-digital feature rolling out first to Xbox Insider members. This allows users to insert a physical disc and redeem a digital copy of compatible Xbox One or Series X games. While older discs like those from Xbox 360 or original Xbox aren’t supported, this move offers a practical bridge between physical and digital libraries, easing the transition for many gamers.

Fans remain curious about the program’s scope and how smoothly it will work. With so many holding physical collections, this could reshape game ownership on Xbox going forward.

Other Highlights From Gamescom and Recent Releases

The recent Gamescom showcase brought fresh looks at titles like Tides of Annihilation and No Law, the latter blending cyberpunk action with stealth and immersive sim elements that caught attention for its creativity. Final Fantasy Revelation’s trailer capped off the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, while The Witcher 3’s upcoming remaster and new DLC promise more for veteran players. Plus, players who don’t own The Witcher 3’s DLC yet will receive Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for free, delivering massive content value.

Metal Gear Solid 4’s port to modern consoles and Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2’s launch rounded out a busy week for releases, with mixed receptions so far on some titles due to bugs or performance issues.

If you’ve been following GTA 6 closely, there’s plenty to digest—from map size and campaign length to the frame rate debate and new gameplay features. With so much anticipation, the community reaction will be fascinating once the game lands.
